At St. Peter and St. Paul, English is a powerful tool for expressing the gifts of communication, creativity, and understanding that God has given us. Through reading, writing, and speaking, we explore stories and ideas that reflect the values of love, kindness, justice, and faith that are central to our Catholic beliefs. The words we use have the power to build up others, share God’s truth, and spread His message of hope and compassion.

At St. Peter and St. Paul, we believe that phonics, reading, and writing are fundamental to building a successful future for our children. Through the Read, Write, Inc. phonics programme, we ensure that every child develops strong foundational reading skills, enabling them to read with confidence and comprehension. We encourage our pupils to write for a range of purposes, empowering them to express their ideas, thoughts, and creativity effectively.

Our reading curriculum is carefully crafted to include a diverse range of authors, from classic literature to modern novels, ensuring that all children are exposed to varied voices, perspectives, and cultural experiences. We also celebrate the beauty of poetry, allowing pupils to explore rhythm, language, and expression in different forms.

At the heart of our approach is the belief that oracy skills—speaking and listening—are vital to success in both academic and personal life. Through focused opportunities for discussion, presentation, and reflection, we help our pupils build confidence in their communication skills.

Above all, we foster a love of reading for pleasure. By creating an environment where children are excited to explore books and stories, we aim to instil a lifelong passion for reading, unlocking new worlds and empowering our pupils to achieve their full potential
